This course provides a technical understanding of radio network planning principles for 5G technology. We will look forward to discussing:

5G technological requirements

5G planning procedure and deployment in mid-band and mmWave spectrum.

5G Link Budget - The calculation of total gain and loss in the system to conclude the received signal level (RSLEV) at the receiver. Link budget refers to the estimation of the maximum allowable path loss (MAPL) in space propagation based on different application scenarios and various parameters between the transmitter and receiver, on the premise of meeting the quality of service requirements - cell coverage requirements

Cell Range Calculation - with the help of MAPL and a suitable propagation model, cell range can be determined. By changing the channel model and the corresponding input parameters, such as receiving sensitivity, penetration loss, transmission power, the link budget of different technologies and frequency bands could be realized.

Planning aspect for physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) and Physical cell ID (PCI) in the 5G deployment: the PCI planning for 5G NR is very much similar to PCI planning for LTE and scrambling code planning for 3G UMTS. Bad or wrong planning can affect the synchronization procedure, demodulation, and handover signaling and degrade the network performance.
