BMG - The Kinks: Echoes of a World (2018)
English | Documentary | Size: 1.80 GB
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the influential musical masterpiece The Kinks Are Village Green Preservation Society, the film explores the creation of the album and the themes it addresses - set into the context of the times in which it was made. An album that has influenced countless musicians - and yet was neglected upon release - the film uncovers the secret of its enduring appeal and finds out how it overcame an inauspicious start to become one of the best-loved albums of all time.
Through a brief overview of their early career, The Kinks: Echoes Of A World describes the journey that Ray Davies and the Kinks took from their raw R&B roots via Dead End Street to Waterloo before arriving at the Village Green.
In a year that was marked by demonstrations, riots and assassinations in 1968, Davies turned away from contemporary issues to focus on matters both more personal and universal: childhood, lost innocence, the passing of old traditions, the unsustainability of urban life - themes that had rarely if ever been tackled in pop music before. The result was The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society.
Written by Charlie Thomas (I'm Not In Love: The Story of 10CC, XTC: This Is Pop, Promises & Lies: The Story of UB40, Fairport Convention: Folk Heroes), the film calls on the testimony of Ray Davies, Dave Davies, Mick Avory, Pete Townshend, Paul Weller, Suggs, Andy Partridge, Damon Albarn, and Noel Gallagher to partly explain why the album was widely greeted with puzzlement upon release and how it has stood the test of time, and the program also includes songs from the album as well as classics like "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," and "A Well Respected Man."
Like a Van Gogh self-portrait, Village Green went relatively unnoticed at the time, but gradually its reputation grew. Now it is recognized as one of the greatest albums of the past 50 years.
