The backdrop of this story is the large island of New Guinea lying north of Australia. The aboriginal name for the island was Papua (usually pronounced Pop-Wah). Like other countries, the island has in the past been governed by several foreign countries and the areas of the island have had several names. Papua, the old name for the island, later portions being Papua and Papua New Guinea and as a whole is referred to as the island of New Guinea. During the time period of this story A land of 800 different native languages and as many villages was once thought to have few native occupant, but it actually had millions. During the time period the story covers, there were many New Guinea natives who had never seen a white man and believed that the island of New Guinea was the entirety of the earth. These Papuan native people became known for their fierce appearance, tribal warfare and cannibalism. They were, and in areas still are, primitive people with little or no contact with the outside world and the foreign occupants hesitated to enter the land of the Papuans. The story describes the adventures of two young men of German heritage born in Papua and follo them from 1914 through 1944. The two become involved with World War One and World War Two at a time difficult for Germans. Their secret lives was that of living with Papua cannibals, head hunters and the quest for New Guinea gold.
