Nebula Awards #29: SFWA's Choices for the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year
Pamela Sargent | 1995 | ISBN: 0156001195 | English | 309 pages | PDF | 11 MB

"The Oscars of Science Fiction," the only SF awards voted by SF writers themselves

To quote Michael Swanwick, one of SF's rising stars and a contributor to this Nebula volume, now is "a particularly exciting time for science fiction: all the old furniture has to be swept aside, reimagined, reinvented." Editor Pamela Sargent sees the Nebula finalists as superb reflections of an increasingly diverse field, each finalist displaying its own (sometimes highly idiosyncratic) excellence. It is perhaps symptomatic of the vigor of the field that this volume includes a story chosen for The Best American Short Stories ("The Man Who Rowed Christopher Columbus Ashore" by Harlan Ellison), an excerpt from a novel named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year (Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson), and a story by a winner of the American Book Award ("Alfred" by Lisa Goldstein).

Besides offering works by the winners in all four Nebula categories (Kim Stanley Robinson, Jack Cady, Charles Sheffield, and Joe Haldeman), Nebula Awards 29 continues the series tradition of featuring fiction, poetry, and essays not found in any other best-of-the-year anthologies. As the Los Angeles Times said of a previous Nebula volume: "If you seek the best in quality and diversity, look no further."
