The album is the fourth edition of the UK Now! series. It is the only album in the series which failed to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart, kept off the top by Hits 1. Although one of its predecessors Now 2 was released earlier that year and charted higher, Now 4 had managed to sell more copies than Now 2 by the end of the year. Although Now 4 was the first in the series to be released on CD, this was only a single-CD release containing tracks. It would be a further two years later before another regularly numbered Now album was released on CD, with a single-disc issue of Now 8, although Now - The Christmas Compact Disc and Now 86 were also made available on the format. The CD format became regular from 1987 with a double-disc issue of Now 10 being the first major release.
