If the centenary of an event is celebrated, it signifies two things: on the one hand, a hundred years is a sufficiently long period to claim that the importance of the event has stood the test of time; at the same time, it is a period short enough to be almost within living memory, so that the historical setting of the event can be recalled reliably.
