Learn about the uses, properties, health hazards and environmental impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

What you'll learn
Understand what per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are, what they are used for, and where they may be found
Learn about the human health and environmental concerns relating to PFAS
Learn about the chemistry and physical properties of PFAS, and how they behave in the environment
Understand the field and laboratory sampling protocols and considerations with respect to PFAS
Review remediation considerations with respect to PFAS
Requirements
No prior environmental or chal experience required. This is an introductory level course, but may contain some scientific terms that are uncommon in colloquial language.
Description
Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, collectively known as "PFAS" encompass thousands of man-made chals that have been in widespread use since their discovery in the 1930's for use in non-stick coatings. PFAS have been widely commercialized since the 1950's and 1960's, not just as non-stick coatings, but for a myriad of other industrial, commercial and consumer benefits, including fire-fighting foams; water, oil, and stain repellants; fire-retardant materials; personal care products; and so much more. PFAS are ubiquitous in the environment, as well as in thousands of household, commercial and industrial products. The same qualities which make these chals so useful and so versatile are unfortunately also what makes them incredibly persistent in the environment - and being both toxic and bioaccumulative, they have been linked to many adverse human health and environmental impacts. In this course, learn about why PFAS have become contaminants of concern, as well as the mechanisms by which they are released to the environment. Other course topics include the uses and applications of PFAS, handling emergency releases, and an overview of applicable regulations and guidance, as well as the fascinating PFAS chemistry and physical properties.Find out about the fate, transport and persistence of PFAS in the environment, as well as sampling considerations, laboratory and field detection, as well as an overview of some remediation approaches and strats.

This course is for anyone who wants to understand more about the wide range of chals known as PFAS. It is for environmental professionals, regulators, and anyone who may be exposed or have been exposed to PFAS (including many personal care products, waterproofing, non-stick cookware, fire-proofing, and many more), and who wishes to broaden their knowledge about the substances. It is suitable for college-level students and above, as well as professionals.
