What you'll learn
C&I, control and instrumentation engineers who specify, install or maintain field instrumentation
Maintenance and commissioning technicians stepping up to instrument specification and calibration work
Automation, electrical, process and mechanical engineers who need to understand the measurement layer
System integrators and panel builders selecting and wiring field instruments and valves

Requirements
A background in C&I, control, electrical, process or mechanical engineering is assumed
Familiarity with P&IDs and basic process plant equipment
This is a practitioner-level course, not a first introduction to engineering
No specific instrumentation or configuration software is required
A willingness to work through datasheets and a worked IS loop calculation
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Every control system is only as good as the instruments feeding it. A miscalibrated transmitter, an incorrectly specified control valve, or an IS loop that violates entity parameters does not just affect accuracy - it creates safety risk, regulatory exposure, and plant downtime.
This course teaches the instrumentation layer that every control loop depends on, the way it is specified and installed on operating process plants. It covers measurement fundamentals, the four measured variables, smart transmitters and HART, control valve selection and sizing, and hazardous area protection.
The work is anchored in the standards that govern it: ISA instrument datasheets and specification practice, the HART protocol for smart device communication, and the ATEX and intrinsic safety framework - Ex i, Ex d, zones, gas groups, and temperature classes - that determines what equipment is legal in a hazardous area.
It opens with measurement fundamentals: accuracy, repeatability, turndown, calibration, and traceability. These concepts decide whether a loop performs, and they recur in every datasheet you will ever raise.
Pressure and temperature measurement come next - gauge, absolute and differential pressure, sensing technologies and installation, then RTDs, thermocouples, thermowells, and transmitter setup.
Flow measurement is covered across two lessons: differential pressure and mechanical meters - orifice, venturi, turbine - then the modern technologies of magnetic, Coriolis, ultrasonic, and vortex, with the selection logic that decides between them.
Level measurement covers hydrostatic and DP methods alongside radar, guided-wave and ultrasonic, and the smart transmitter lessons show how HART diagnostics and asset management change day-to-day instrument work.
Two lessons are devoted to control valves - globe, ball, and butterfly types, trim and characteristics, then Cv sizing, actuator selection, and positioners - because the final control element is where many loops actually fail.
The course is built by a practising engineer with 15+ years specifying instrumentation on oil and gas, energy, and industrial projects - including the hazardous area loop calculations and datasheets that close out a real design. The hazardous area lessons cover classification and the protection concepts and entity-parameter checks that keep an IS loop compliant.
If you work with process instrumentation - specifying, installing, maintaining or simply relying on it - and you want to handle instruments and valves with confidence, and to know an instrument is safe and correct before it reaches the field, start with the measurement fundamentals and work through to the section project.
