This study does not offer a history of Justinian's wars or even a historical commentary on the Wars. Rather, it asks a question prior to both of those tasks: how should Procopius be read? This is emphatically a historiographical study. Yet his works fill many hundreds of pages, and a general study covering most major themes would inevitably result in superficiality. It focus on details that are dismissed with impatience, such as anecdotes, or never discussed, such as philosophy. Military, social, and cultural historians will be cautioned and admonished and given new guidelines for the use of these texts.

This book will situate Procopius in his immediate historical context well as in his transhistorical literary context.
