A mandala is a balanced, geometric figure, with repeated shapes and lots of interest. They are rooted in spiritual beliefs with ties to universal religions. In class, well examine the mandala from an calming aspect, with concentric shapes, repeated patterns, and simple outlines. Unlike traditional symmetrical mandalas, well create our mandala with an emphasis on the soothing process. Instead of striving for perfection, with specific shapes, well focus on rounded shapes and curves. The resulting image is a mandala of sorts, with the significance given to repeating (concentric) shapes and soft rounded images. Watercolors will be used for the background of each concentric shape, whether they are circles, ovals, or rounded rectangles.
